southern charm

back in december, my husband and i had the pleasure of co-hosting a couples baby shower for two of our best friends, neely and justin holland. i was so excited to really help host my first baby shower (i designed invitations for my sisters' showers and one for my cousin, but i didn't really do much else. oops, i'm the youngest. ok?) that i went pinterest crazy looking for the perfect theme. a "southern charm" theme was decided and from there, visions of burlap, gingham and monograms danced in my head. i'm so sad i don't have pretty pictures of the burlap bunting or the monogram toothpick flags that we put on the tiny little mac and cheese pies and adorable little mini dessert pies. but, you can imagine it right? don't forget the mason jars of pink lemonade with pink and grey paper straws. whoa! sorry, this kind of stuff really excites me.

all the excitement and details, but no pictures to prove it. you see, the shower took place before i got my nice new cannon slr, soooo the pictures from my little cannon powershot just aren't acceptable.

i do have pictures of the invitations! it did happen! and i just love how they turned out. kraft paper envelopes were a must. i'm a huge fan of the kraft envelopes. i like to use them for pretty much everything but, they just so happened to go perfect with our theme!

wiley beth will be here any day now! we are so excited for her upcoming arrival.

back to school

happy monday, everyone! this isn't just any normal monday for me. i pretty much always seem to have the monday blues but not today. nope. i begin a calligraphy class this evening at tcu! the class is every monday for eight weeks, and i can't wait to get started! who would have thought? i'm actually excited about class, four years later. four years?! surely not.

anyway, i really hope to learn some things from this class because i would love to implement more illustration and handwritten elements into my designs. if i had only sat down and listened to my mom when i was younger (seems like i've said that a lot lately). she's the artistic influence in the family and also knows calligraphy. she used to try and sneak in a few calligraphy tips and knowledge back in the day, but i always seemed to be too busy... watching tv? oh teenagers. =) sorry, mom!

so besides my mom, of course, my most favorite calligrapher and illustrator is anna bond from rifle paper co. i am completely in love with her work. see. look how beautiful and perfect it is!

it's my birthday tomorrow =), so i felt this print was appropriate. but, you should check out all of her work, and you'll completely understand my obsession.

i told you i would post pictures of the office renovation, so here they are. there are no "before" pictures of the entire office bc it was just.that.bad. you get the point with the first two pics.

it's still a work in progress and there are lots of little things i still want to add. but at least you get the idea and i get to go to work happy. cheers to a clean, creative space.

as 2011 comes to an end, i am feeling so blessed for such a wonderful year. i just returned home from spending christmas with my family at our log cabin in the woods. there's something about being there, surrounded by God's amazing creation, that makes me really reflect on everything i have truly been blessed with. 2011 was a great year for paper nest by lesa and i look forward to 2012 being even better! thank you to all my amazing customers and thank you everyone for the support.

lots of things will be happening in the month of january to prepare for the upcoming year. i'm completely redoing my office. out with the old and in the with the new! as soon as i get everything just the way i like it, i'll get some pictures up to show everyone. i will be happily taking those pictures with my brand new canon slr my sweet husband surprised me with for christmas. bare with me though, i'm no expert and for some reason those three photography classes in college aren't coming back to me as fast as i had hoped. anyway, the pictures and the office... it's all going to be a work in progress, but i'm really excited to give this room a little facelift and take some fun pictures in the process. more importantly, i will be working on removing the holiday cards and adding all new cards for all different occasions to the online store. AND, don't forget, you can contact me or order directly from the online store, at any time, to place a custom order.

better late than never! in the past i have only accepted custom orders for holiday cards, or any orders at all, rather, but this year i am offering a little collection of cards that will be for sale by me, online! finally, i know. i have been working around the clock to get this site put together. this weekend i'll just be making some finishing touches and monday, monday will be the launch day! holiday is just a preview of what's to come. i will be selling baby shower, baby announcement, wedding shower and much more on the site after holidays.

i had hoped to get the site up a few weeks ago, but between orders and other projects, it didn't quite happen that way. some of you may be thinking, it's just november! we haven't even celebrated thanksgiving yet! interestingly enough, i've been working on christmas and holiday designs since last june. is it summer yet? it's been six months of christmas in my brain. but, don't panic, there's still time! i don't want to stress out those of you who haven't ordered holiday cards yet. it's totally normal. not for me, but it's totally normal. haha. jk. plus, now you'll have an opportunity to order through my site.

i am still accepting custom orders. you will be able to make those straight through the site as well.

so, here it is, a sneak peak of a few cards and options that will be available on the site.

keeping with the baby theme... let me tell you, it has been one exciting week full of babies for very dear friends of ours! starting with sunday, clay and ashley and the arrival of miss landry lamb. then, tuesday at 6:53 pm, marshall and cassie welcomed isabelle kate porterfield (zizzy) into the world. and last night, we found out neely and justin will be having a girl! my friends are making up for the lack of nieces in my family (we have FOUR nephews and one sweet angel baby niece). so in celebration of babies, i'm sharing with you a baby shower invitation. the theme for the shower is alligators and seersucker, so i created a stitched look in the alligators and stripes to coordinate. for all you mothers who smock, this is a good one for you. now you just need your friends to throw you a smocked or seersucker theme baby shower... with alligators. =)

so i was feeling a little austin nostalgia this morning with acl taking place this weekend. here is a rehearsal dinner invitation i created that took place in austin. this client loved the idea of incorporating the austin skyline, so i ran with that and ended up with this final design. i knew i had to add a touch of burnt orange to the design, which they were super happy about. thank you, anderson family, for the order!

on another note, if you were wondering (or even if you weren't), i will not be at acl this weekend. i will be rooting on the horned frogs at our first home game. go frogs! =) ...and one more thing, my friends molly and sager are selling their acl tickets so they can go to the frogs game. boom! true fans, ladies and gentlemen.

happy friday, go frogs and yay america! i didn't get this card posted for july fourth because my summer hiatus was still in effect. but, i figured today is as good as any, or better. labor day weekend, u.s. holiday, college football... today is perfect!

i created this design for one of my bf's older sister. she was planning a surprise party for her husband on the fourth of july weekend and asked me to come up with a design that correlated with the theme. fireworks? check. stripes? check. i think that pretty much sums it up! plus, i love any opportunity to throw in some stripes. (shout out to the dalrymples who are some of the biggest horned frog fans i know! another perfect reason to post your card today.)

hope everyone has a safe holiday weekend! hopefully before 5:00, i'll be running out of this office, driving to our family log cabin in east texas and turning on espn to cheer on the horned frogs. i'm too excited to work!

did you know lots of businesses go by paper nest? there are quite a few. ugh huh, i thought i was real creative when i came up with it. still, i don't want to change it completely. it has meaning. yeah, unfortunately it has meaning for other business owners too.

anyhow, i've actually been wanting to add "by lesa" to my logo for quite a while... and spruce it up a little in the process. since the spelling of my name is pretty rare, i thought it would be a smart decision to add it to my logo. that way, there's no confusion out there.

i am thrilled to share a wedding invitation set i did for one of my bf's, the newly mrs., katie m peck. i have been so excited to share these and thanks to sarah kate barger, from sarah kate photography, i get to show you these beautiful photos of the finished product. after working with katie on her style and color preferences, we came up with a final look.

all pieces are letterpress using crane & co.'s lettra #220 bright white. the invitations were die cut with rounded corners and fit perfectly in crane's marquis envelopes.

i included the third set of images, pre letterpress, so you can see my favorite little detail on the front of the rsvp postcard, perfect for my "french lover friend" katie. j'adore.

all this warm weather has really made me excited about spring. i love to see the flowers blossom and all the trees turn green. hence, my excitement to share this green and white flower inspired invitation. i designed this invitation for a dear friend from high school who is getting married july. the wedding will take place in florida... another reason to be excited about warm weather... beach weather! happy beautiful sunny day, everyone!

i've been waiting to post this invitation until after the party so i could include a few photos! this past friday my best friends and i hosted a couples shower for our friend berkeley and her fiance freddie. kendall (second from the right) found a great little party room at the bronx cafe in dallas. the people at the bronx were great to work with, helping us arrange the room just how we wanted. i loved the exposed brick inside! of course, i was so excited to get to design the invitations and crafty katie (second from the left) created the adorable banner. molls (far right) put together some pretty green flower arrangements. can you tell the theme was green? everything turned out so great!

here's a baby shower invitation i created for my dear cousin, michael anne, who is expecting a baby boy in late april! this is her first and we are all SO excited for her. michael anne is a tcu alumna and her husband, price, is a texas alumnus... it's only fitting that the nursery will be purple and orange!

because we are asking guests to bring baby books instead of cards, i designed a matching label to be placed inside each book.

i am so excited to announce that indigo prints has launched! i apologize that i am about a week late in sharing this news, but what better way to announce it than on my birthday!? they are currently calling it a "soft launch" while they work on minor issues and bugs, so things may be a little slow at the moment.

dad retires

this past weekend, along with my two older sisters and mom, i had the honor of throwing a surprise retirement party for my amazing dad. he has worked in education for as long as i can remember. when i was in the eighth grade, i was lucky enough to have him as my track and basketball coach. he also coached my guy friends in football and taught biology at the high school for many years. when i was in high school, he moved on to assistant principal at marshall high school, and after, he reached his ultimate goal by becoming superintendent for the first time for central heights isd. he ended his education career as superintendent for daingerfield isd. dad put his heart and sole in to education and always put the kids first. he stayed true to the beliefs and practices of his own father and my grandfather, daddy earl, who was also an educator and superintendent in our hometown of henderson.

so many of my dad's friends came to show their support, and i know it meant the world to him.

happy retirement, daddy! you deserve it!

sweet baby chase turns 1

it has been crazy, so i apologize for not getting recipes up over the past few weeks, if anyone has missed them. i will get back to that soon, i promise.

here's an invitation i did for my sweet little nephew, chase, who turns ONE YEAR on december 30. i can't believe it has been a whole year. he's the sweetest little punkin head, ever. well, he ties with my three other nephews and niece. aunts can't choose favorites! i love them all.

as you can tell, the theme is little quarterback/football. chase's daddy was a quarterback at TCU and we think chase will be too. =) can't wait to celebrate! i have a feeling he'll be walking, come party time.

i apologize for my lack of posts over the past week! yesterday evening, i returned from new orleans where my husband, steve, and i celebrated one year of marriage. we had an awesome time and ate lots and lots of food. i am so thankful to be married to my best friend. the past year has been the best year of my life and i could not be happier.

i've decided to add a little something extra to the paper nest blog. it has nothing to do with invitation design, but my hope is, if you're not looking to order invitations at the moment, maybe you'll be interested in a recipe or two.

over the past few months, i've started cooking and baking like a maniac. i don't know where it came from, but i'm loving it! fortunately for me, my mom is an amazing cook and my husband, don't get me started. he basically grew up in the kitchen. but, because of those two, i've kind of always shied away from the kitchen. i have definitely picked up some great tips, but i've never really had the kitchen to myself. i'm not complaining, by the way, just telling it like it is. i mean, who wouldn't want a husband who loves to cook?

when my husband, steve, and i got married, we pretty much cooked together or he cooked and i cleaned. well now, he works in dallas, so he makes the commute from fort worth to dallas every week day and doesn't get home until 7 pm or later. i work from home. it wouldn't quite make sense for him to do the cooking any more, right? we've always tried to cook two to three times a week and usually we do. but, it mostly depends on whether or not i'm productive enough on mondays to get a menu together. i find myself spending way too much time browsing the internet for recipes.

the thing is, some days i have no idea what to even look for. i want to look one place. and there, i want everyone else to tell me what they plan to cook that week.

here's my plan. at the beginning of every week, i'm going to tell you "what's cookin' at the abney house." i'll give you our menu from the previous week, but only the successful dishes that are worth sharing. if you'd like to share your menu from the previous week, leave a comment and let us know what you cooked (don't forget the recipe). this way, maybe everyone can just switch menus! well, that's what i plan to do, anyway.

the goal here was to create an invitation that represents a bachelorette party/girls night out, without going too over-the-top girly. i really love how it turned out. it has a sort of sexy feel to it without all the cheesiness... not that cheesiness is a bad thing!

a unique and fun way to ask friends to be a part of your wedding. i designed the heart illustration and added custom text from the bride-to-be, cathleen. the colors were chosen to match her wedding. the cards were printed on linen cardstock.

a pear for a pair

i designed this save the date for a couple who wanted something simple that incorporated their wedding colors, rust orange, navy and green. the bride also mentioned fall fruit. i went with a pear for the green and included the other colors in the type. the card was printed on an elegant linen cardstock.
